Vodafone loses appeal against Indian tax bill - (Telecompaper) Vodafone has lost its appeal against an Indian tax bill for its takeover of Hutchison's Indian mobile operation in 2007. The Bombay High Court ruled that Vodafone must pay capital gains tax on the acquisition of a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar. The mobile operator could face a total tax bill of more than USD 2 billion. Vodafone is expected to appeal the verdict to India's Supreme Court in New Delhi, as it argues the transaction should not be taxable in India because it took place overseas. Des Webb, global tax executive at Vodafone, told the Financial Times outside the Mumbai High Court that it would take the Indian tax department "eight weeks before they pass any order or demand for tax. At the moment it's not clear how much we would have to pay." He said the company would look at the judgement in detail before deciding on further action, but it would "seriously consider" an appeal to the Supreme Court. Under the Hutchison Essar sale, a Dutch company controlled b...

Telenor sticks to Indian investment plan - (Telecompaper) Telenor said it will maintain its investment in Uninor, its Indian subsidiary, and denied reports that the company was under pressure from investors to exit the loss-making venture, reports the Economic Times. Uninor's target is still to secure an 8 percent market share by 2018 and cash-flow positive in five years, said director of communications for Telenor Asia, Glenn Mandelid. He added that there was no change in the company's long-term plans for India. Telenor currently has less than 1 percent market share in India's mobile market. Bloomberg reported earlier that some investors in Telenor viewed the company's plans to become profitable in India within three years as unrealistic. These investors pointed out that tariff wars in India's ultra-competitive mobile market had significantly lowered the average revenue per customer, making Telenor's earlier guidance irrelevant. Telenor said it expects additional EBITDA losses this year on Uninor of around USD 470 million and ...
